Getting Started with Path of Exile 2
PoE2 throws a lot at new players at once. This page is the on-ramp — read this first, then branch out into the deeper guides linked at the bottom.
Picking a class
Every class can eventually go in multiple directions once you pick an Ascendancy, so don't overthink your first choice, the starting attribute focus matters less than it looks like it should. Our full Class Guide compares all 8 classes side by side. If you want the lowest-friction start, our Build Tier List flags which current builds are rated as good league starters specifically.
Understanding gems before you touch the skill panel
Skills in PoE2 are tied to your weapon, not your class — a big change from the original Path of Exile if you're coming from there. You won't find finished gems as drops; you'll find Uncut Gems that you turn into a specific skill yourself. Read the full skill gem breakdown before you start making choices you'll want to undo.
The passive tree: don't panic
The tree looks overwhelming at first glance. The practical version: pick one Keystone as your anchor before you start allocating points, path toward Notables rather than detouring for small passives, and don't worry about "wasting" points early — respeccing costs Gold, not real money, and the cost only gets steep at higher levels. Full details on the passive tree page.
Currency and trading, in one paragraph
You'll accumulate orbs constantly — don't hoard them out of caution. Chaos Orbs and Exalted Orbs are your everyday spending money; Divine Orbs are for expensive purchases. When you're ready to actually buy or sell gear, the trade guide covers the three trading systems and how not to get scammed.
What to actually prioritize in your first playthrough
- Follow your build guide's leveling section rather than freestyling the passive tree — most wasted points happen in the first 20 levels.
- Don't skip side content that grants passive skill points or Weapon Set Passive Skill Points — they add up to real power over a full campaign.
- Pick up an Uncut Gem stash habit early — having spares on hand saves you from being stuck with a skill you don't like.
- Don't feel pressured to understand the trade site on day one — the campaign is fully completable on found gear.
