Mercenary
Overview
A versatile ranged fighter who can destroy enemy shields or armour with rapid fire, wall off paths with grenades, or shotgun bosses down at close range. The crossbow's multiple ammo types give this class more built-in combo potential than most.
Playstyle Notes
- Combo attacks across ammo types (freeze then shatter, poison cloud then detonate) are a core part of the class fantasy
- All three Ascendancies support the popular grenade/ballista leveling archetype, they differ mainly in endgame identity
- Gemling Legionnaire uniquely breaks the normal gem-socket limits, unlocking build combinations no other Ascendancy can replicate
Good For
- Players who like combo-based, multi-tool ranged gameplay
- Anyone wanting strong party utility through Witchhunter or Tactician
- Players chasing maximum build flexibility via Gemling Legionnaire, once they can afford the investment
Choosing an Ascendancy
Class Overview
The Mercenary brings crossbow-driven ranged combat to Path of Exile 2, and the crossbow is unlike any other weapon in the game. Rather than simply firing arrows, the crossbow uses a reload-based ammunition system with multiple ammo types — Fragmentation Rounds for AoE, Permafrost Bolts for Cold control, Armour Piercing Rounds for single-target, Galvanic Shards for Lightning clear, and Explosive Shot for fire burst. Each ammo type changes your combat profile, and the Mercenary’s identity is built around switching between them or specializing in one to create combo chains: freeze an enemy with Permafrost Bolts, then shatter them with Fragmentation Rounds; lay down a Gas Grenade cloud, then detonate it with Explosive Shot.
This combo-driven, multi-tool approach makes the Mercenary one of the most mechanically rich classes in the game. You are never just pressing one button — you are layering damage types, managing reload timing, and positioning grenades. The class sits between Strength and Dexterity on the passive tree, giving natural access to armour, evasion, life, and projectile damage nodes. This dual-attribute start also makes the Mercenary one of the more durable ranged classes, capable of wearing armour/evasion hybrid bases that pure Dexterity classes like the Ranger cannot easily access.
The crossbow’s reload mechanic is the skill-defining interaction. Unlike bows, which fire freely, crossbows require periodic reloads. Firing during a reload wastes damage, and understanding the reload rhythm is the single most impactful skill improvement for new Mercenary players. The 0.5 patch adjusted crossbow base mana costs to 0, allowing external “add skill cost” modifiers to affect crossbow skills for the first time, opening new build-crafting possibilities. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Core Mechanics
Crossbow Ammunition System. Each crossbow skill corresponds to an ammo type with distinct behavior: Fragmentation Rounds (AoE shotgun burst), Permafrost Bolts (freeze and slow), Armour Piercing Rounds (armour break and single-target), Galvanic Shards (Lightning chain clear), Explosive Shot (fire impact burst). Ammo skills now have a 0 base mana cost as of 0.5, enabling new cost-modifier interactions. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Reload Timing. Crossbows require periodic reloads. Managing the reload window — not firing during reload, using reload-on-kill mechanics — is the core skill expression of the class. The Arjun’s Mettle unique was nerfed from 100% to 25% reload-on-kill in 0.5, significantly impacting crossbow sustain builds. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Grenade and Ballista Synergy. Grenades provide area denial and delayed burst damage. Ballista totems provide persistent damage while you reposition. The Grenade Ballista archetype is the most popular Mercenary leveling path, and all three Ascendancies support it. Tactician enhances it most directly through banner and totem nodes.
Combo Chains Across Ammo Types. The class fantasy is built on cross-ammo combos: Permafrost Bolts freeze then Fragmentation Rounds shatter frozen enemies for amplified damage. Gas Arrow creates a cloud then Explosive Shot detonates it for fire burst. These interactions reward players who think in terms of setup and payoff rather than just damage rotation.
Ascendancy Comparison
Witchhunter
Witchhunter is the all-rounder Ascendancy, mixing burst damage, party-friendly Culling Strike, and a genuinely strong defensive option in its Sorcery Ward package. Key changes in 0.5: Obsessive Rituals now causes 50% less armour and evasion rating (up from 35%), making Witchhunter noticeably squishier and forcing more investment in defensive layers. Despite this nerf, Witchhunter remains the most commonly recommended pick for bossing and general-purpose play. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Current Meta Rating: A-Tier for bossing, B-Tier for league start (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
Tactician
Tactician is the most commonly recommended pick for the well-tested Grenade Ballista leveling path. Its nodes enhance banners, totems, immobilization, and tactical support. The Supporting Fire Ballista build is extremely safe and scales without much gear — armour break stacking on bosses while towers chain through packs. It asks for deliberate passive pathing and a tolerance for totem play. (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
Current Meta Rating: A-Tier for league start (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
Gemling Legionnaire
Gemling Legionnaire has the highest ceiling and build freedom in the class. The 0.5 patch reworked two key nodes: Crystalline Potential was removed and replaced with Essence of Virtue (grants Virtuous Barrier skill with gemstone Motes), and Advanced Thaumaturgy was reworked to provide universal gem quality buffs. The 0.5.1 patch fixed Mote buff stacks to persist between non-town areas, a meaningful quality-of-life improvement. However, its currency requirements make it a poor budget or league-starter choice. Current Meta Rating: B-Tier for league start, A-Tier for geared endgame (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
Leveling Guide
Acts 1-2: Grab Explosive Shot from the first available vendor and keep it as primary damage throughout. Add Gas Arrow as soon as it becomes available. Permafrost Bolts provide crowd control and safer leveling if enemies are reaching you too often. Prioritize crossbows with fire damage or elemental damage. The Mercenary’s ranged playstyle provides natural safety — minimal need to tank hits. (Exile Codex Witchhunter Leveling)
Acts 3-4: The Grenade Ballista archetype should be coming online. Add Ballista Totem support and begin layering grenades with crossbow attacks. If running Witchhunter, your Culling Strike becomes valuable for party play. Fragmentation Rounds quality now grants +2 additional fragments per shot (reworked in 0.5 from flat physical damage), providing significantly higher AoE and single-target damage. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Acts 5-6: All three Ascendancies are fully operational. Tactician and Witchhunter are at their best here. Focus on capping elemental resistances and acquiring movement speed on boots. The Frost Fragmentation Crossbow build — Permafrost Bolts to freeze, Fragmentation Rounds to shatter — is a top-tier 0.5 leveling option that requires no grenade mechanics and uses simple skill rotations. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
Key Skill Picks: Explosive Shot (primary damage), Gas Arrow (layered damage + ignite), Fragmentation Rounds (AoE burst), Permafrost Bolts (freeze control), Ballista Totem (persistent damage), Smoke Mine (defensive repositioning).
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Ranged playstyle provides natural safety across all acts
- Crossbow ammo types offer genuine combo depth — the class rewards creative skill sequencing
- All three Ascendancies are viable, each with a distinct identity
- Grenade Ballista is a proven, low-complexity leveling archetype
- Armour/evasion hybrid access from Str/Dex start provides better defensive baselines than pure Dex classes
Cons:
- Crossbow reload timing requires awareness — firing during reload wastes damage
- The Obsessive Rituals nerf (50% less armour/evasion) makes Witchhunter squishier in 0.5
- Arjun’s Mettle nerf (100% to 25% reload-on-kill) hurts crossbow-focused builds
- Gas Arrow layering requires managing two separate damage skills against bosses
- Gemling Legionnaire’s true ceiling sits behind currency investment and unpublished alternate-quality data
Recommended Starter Build
Grenade Ballista Tactician is the recommended starter for new Mercenary players. It is extremely safe, scales without much gear, and the Supporting Fire Ballista provides persistent damage while you reposition. The build has been verified as league-start viable by multiple creators. (Exile Codex Warbringer/Grenade Totem) (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
If you prefer direct damage over totems, the Frost Fragmentation Crossbow build (Permafrost Bolts + Fragmentation Rounds) provides simpler gameplay with strong freeze control and is an excellent alternative.
Patch 0.5 Notes Impact
Patch 0.5 brought significant changes to the Mercenary:
- Crossbow base cost rework: Ammo skills now have 0 base mana cost, allowing external cost modifiers to affect crossbow skills for the first time. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
- Fragmentation Rounds quality rework: Now grants +2 additional fragments per shot instead of 0-20% increased physical damage. Far higher consistent AoE and single-target damage. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
- Gemling Legionnaire rework: Crystalline Potential removed, replaced with Essence of Virtue. Advanced Thaumaturgy reworked to universal gem quality buffs. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
- Witchhunter nerf: Obsessive Rituals now causes 50% less armour and evasion (up from 35%). (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
- Arjun’s Mettle nerf: Reload-on-kill reduced from 100% to 25%, significantly impacting crossbow sustain builds. (AOEAH Mercenary Guide)
- 0.5.1 fix: Gemling Legionnaire Mote buff stacks now persist between non-town areas. (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)
Choosing an Ascendancy
Witchhunter is frequently rated the strongest all-rounder of the three, mixing burst damage, party-friendly Culling Strike, and a genuinely strong defensive option in its Sorcery Ward package. Tactician is the most commonly recommended pick for the well-tested Grenade Ballista leveling path specifically. Gemling Legionnaire has the highest ceiling and build freedom in the class, but its currency requirements make it a poor budget or league-starter choice. For a first Mercenary, start with Tactician for the smoothest leveling experience, and consider respeccing to Witchhunter or Gemling Legionnaire once you have the currency to support their specific needs.
