Class Overview

The Huntress is Path of Exile 2’s newest class, introduced in the 0.5 Return of the Ancients expansion, and she has immediately become one of the most popular picks in the game. As a pure Dexterity class starting in the Dexterity section of the passive tree, the Huntress revolves around spear combat — a weapon type unique to her that supports both melee strikes and throwable ranged attacks in the same weapon. This “in and out” combat identity means you are never fully committed to melee range or fully standing back at range; you fluidly shift between the two depending on what each encounter demands.

The Huntress also has access to trap deployment for targeted burst damage, elemental AoE skills with strong crowd control, and high mobility through native movement skills. She plays in the mid-range — closer to melee than the Ranger but with more reach than the Warrior — making her combat more dynamic than pure ranged classes but less punishing than true melee when facing one-shot mechanics. Her signature combo, Whirling Slash into Twister, is currently one of the most popular and powerful mechanics in the entire game, and it works across all three of her Ascendancies. (ExitLag Huntress Guide)

The class’s Dexterity focus means she naturally scales evasion and projectile damage, and her position on the tree gives easy access to projectile, movement speed, and elemental damage clusters. The tradeoff is lower base life and armour than Strength-based classes, so positioning and mobility are not just nice-to-have — they are survival tools.

Core Mechanics

Spear Combat and Weapon Swapping. The Huntress’s spear supports both melee attacks and ranged throws. The weapon swap system is central to optimizing her damage: Weapon Set 1 is typically used for Whirling Slash and attack speed, while Weapon Set 2 holds Twister and damage-scaling supports. Understanding and configuring weapon set passives is arguably the single most impactful skill improvement for new Huntress players. (Mobalytics Twister Huntress Guide)

The Twister + Whirling Slash Combo. This is the defining mechanic of the class in the current patch. The combo works by casting Ice-Tipped Arrows to prime enemies, using Whirling Slash 1-3 times to build up stages, and then releasing Twister for a massive burst of Cold damage. The interaction scales with elemental penetration, AoE investment, and the Huntress’s natural projectile scaling. It is satisfying, powerful, and works on every Ascendancy. (Mobalytics Twister Huntress Guide)

Beast Taming (Spirit Walker). Spirit Walker’s The Natural Order node empowers the Tame Beast skill to capture unique boss-type creatures (Mighty Silverfist, Zekoa the Headcrusher, Crowbell, the Chimera, Rakkar) and summon them as permanent companions. The monkey (Mighty Silverfist) is particularly notable for its 25% base crit chance and 100% crit bonus. (RPGStash Spirit Walker Guide)

Animal Spirits (Spirit Walker). Three Azmerian spirits — Stag, Owl, and Bear — each provide a distinct combat enhancement. Stag generates Vivid Wisps for movement-based shockwave attacks. Owl generates Primal Feathers that empower projectiles with additional projectiles and speed. Bear summons a permanent companion that maims, slams, and intimidates enemies without counting toward the companion cap. Allocating all three unlocks the free Sacred Unity capstone. Ascendancy Comparison

Spirit Walker

Spirit Walker is the 0.5-new Ascendancy and currently the most popular Huntress option by a wide margin — 19% pickrate (22,597 characters tracked on poe.ninja) as of 0.5.4b, making it the second-most-picked ascendancy in the league behind only Martial Artist. (ExileIndex Spirit Walker)

Key nodes:

Spirit Walker excels at every playstyle the Huntress supports — Twister combo, companion army, projectile scaling, or boss taming. Its only real weakness is complexity: the spirit system and weapon swap interactions have a learning curve.

Current Meta Rating: S-Tier (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)

Amazon

Amazon is the precision-hunting, single-target Ascendancy. Key mechanics include Marked for Death (dramatically increased damage against a designated target), Hunter’s Patience (charges built through movement, expended for massive damage spikes), and Rapid Reload (cooldown resets on kill). Amazon is more straightforward than Spirit Walker and performs strongly in content where single-target boss damage is the bottleneck. It is the most beginner-friendly Huntress Ascendancy for players who do not want to manage the Twister combo or spirit system. (ExitLag Huntress Guide)

Current Meta Rating: A-Tier (NextTier 0.5.1 Tier List)

Ritualist

Ritualist is the sacrifice-and-jewelry-scaling Ascendancy. It has real endgame ceiling through ring and amulet scaling, and its downside-first node structure (sacrificing resources for power) creates a high-risk, high-reward playstyle. However, its gear dependency and the fact that its best builds require specific jewelry combinations make it a poor first pick for the class. It is better suited as a second or third character once you have currency to invest. (Mobalytics Twister Huntress Guide)

Current Meta Rating: B-Tier for league start, A-Tier for geared endgame (community consensus)

Leveling Guide

Acts 1-2: Pick up Spear Throw and Pounce early. Start using the Twister combo as soon as both skills are available (level 2 for Twister). Use your Talisman and Pounce with Weapon Set 1, and your spear skills with Weapon Set 2. Grab Ice-Tipped Arrows to prime enemies for the combo. The first ascendancy lab should be completed as early as possible — Spirit Walker players should take Primal Bounty or Wild Protector; Amazon players should take Predatory Instinct.

Acts 3-4: By late Act 3, pick up Thunderous Leap and drop the Talisman. Now both weapon sets use spears: Weapon Set 1 for Whirling Slash and Thunderous Leap, Weapon Set 2 for Twister, Ice-Tipped Arrows, and Barrage. Add War Banner for boss damage and Freezing Mark for crowd control. The Twister combo should be feeling powerful by now.

Acts 5-6: All three Ascendancies are online. Spirit Walker should have Sacred Unity active if going the three-spirit route. Amazon should have Marked for Death and Hunter’s Patience rolling. Focus on capping elemental resistances (75% to all) and acquiring movement speed on boots.

Key Skill Picks: Twister (combo finisher), Whirling Slash (combo builder), Ice-Tipped Arrows (primer), Barrage (single-target), Freezing Mark (boss CC), War Banner (damage aura). (Mobalytics Twister Huntress Guide)

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Cons:

Twister Spirit Walker is the recommended starter for new Huntress players. It combines the most popular and powerful combo in the game with the Ascendancy specifically built to enhance it. The Primal Bounty node adds projectiles and speed to Twister’s internal mechanics, and the Stag’s Shocking Ground from Vivid Stampede enhances lightning damage taken by enemies. The build requires no mandatory uniques — it has been verified as a top no-unique league starter. (Mobalytics Twister Huntress Guide) (ExileIndex Spirit Walker)

If the multi-button combo playstyle does not appeal, Amazon with Ice Shot provides a simpler, more straightforward ranged alternative that still benefits from the Huntress’s natural projectile scaling.

Patch 0.5 Notes Impact

Patch 0.5 introduced the Huntress as an entirely new class, along with the Spirit Walker Ascendancy and the Twister + Whirling Slash combo that has defined the league. Key changes:

Choosing an Ascendancy

Spirit Walker, added in 0.5.0, is the clear top pick right now, its passive nodes were built specifically around the Twister combo the class already wants to run, out-scaling the other two Ascendancies for that mechanic. Amazon is the more beginner-friendly, gear-agnostic leveling option if you’d rather not commit to Twister immediately. Ritualist has real endgame ceiling through jewelry scaling, but its gear dependency and downside-first node structure make it a poor first pick for the class. For league-start purposes, the gap between Spirit Walker and Amazon is smaller than the tier list suggests — Amazon’s simplicity has real value if you find the spirit system overwhelming — but Spirit Walker’s flexibility and power ceiling make it the stronger long-term choice.
