The Trialmaster Boss Guide
Phase Breakdown
- Phase 1: Spear FormTriggerFight start; he returns to this form whenever he recalls his spearMechanicMelee-focused: an overhead slam that erupts branching sunders in a cone (the one-shot), a spinning multi-swing combo that fires blood projectiles, a planted-spear channel whose expanding blood zone detonates at full radius, and a spear throw that leaves expanding ground pulses plus a slowing physical degen zone where it landsCounterHug a wall so his outward-branching mechanics cover less of the arena, and dodge-roll the instant the overhead slam starts to come down - never try to squeeze in one more hit
- Phase 2: Caster / Unarmed FormTriggerAfter his Spear Throw plants the spear; lasts until he recalls itMechanicRanged-focused: lobs fire, cold and lightning projectiles that explode on impact, and fires a physical Blood Orb that bounces off walls and can duplicate on impact; periodically spawns a tethering Heart that slows you inside its radius and stuns plus damages you if you move too far awayCounterTrack the Blood Orb through its wall bounces instead of assuming it travels once; break the Heart tether only when no other mechanic is overlapping, or wait it out inside the radius
- Phase 3: Time StopTriggerPeriodically in either form (30-second cooldown in client data)MechanicTime freezes while he teleports between positions and pre-casts three form-specific attacks - three Sunders in Spear Form or three Blood Orbs in Caster Form - that all land once time resumesCounterMemorize where he teleports during the freeze, then reposition to a safe angle before time resumes; starting the sequence near a wall shrinks the area the attacks can cover
Most Common Deaths
- Getting one-shot by the opening overhead slam (Sunder) before the fight has even settled - pre-roll as the arena loads
- Fighting in the open arena center instead of hugging a wall, letting branching Sunders, spear pulses and Blood Orbs cover far more space
- Breaking a Heart tether at a bad moment - the stun plus detonation combo is lethal when it overlaps a Sunder or Blood Orb, and travel skills are disabled while tethered
- Losing track of his teleport positions during Time Stop and standing inside a pre-cast Sunder or Blood Orb when time resumes
Full Fight Guide
Full Fight Guide
The Trialmaster is the final boss of the Trial of Chaos, one of PoE2’s two Ascendancy trials alongside the Trial of the Sekhemas (whose final boss is Zarokh, the Temporal). Defeating either one for the first time grants your final Ascendancy points (points 7 and 8) (timesaver.gg). He is widely regarded as one of the best-designed bosses in PoE2 — his attacks are slow and readable with clear tells, which is exactly why the players who die to him tend to die to the same one or two moves every time. Understanding those moves is the entire fight.
Lore-wise, the Trialmaster was once Ixchel, a human member of the Order of the Djinn, before becoming Chaos’s tireless tormentor of aspirants (poe2db community wiki). His name lives on in the Ixchel’s Torment unique strongbox and Lineage support gem, both tied to this encounter (poe2db). Mechanically he is a repeatable pinnacle encounter: the first kill finishes your Ascendancy, and after that he becomes a targeted unique farm. He is also the NPC who handles Ascendancy passive respecs at the Temple of Chaos — since patch 0.2.0f you can talk to him to refund Ascendancy points (official patch notes).
How to Unlock the Trialmaster
You need three Fate fragments, each dropped by a specific boss in the 10th round of a 10-round Trial of Chaos run: Cowardly Fate from Uxmal, the Beastlord; Deadly Fate from Bahlak, the Sky Seer; and Victorious Fate from Chetza, the Feathered Plague (mobalytics.gg). Only the 10-round version matters here, and trial length scales with the area level of your Inscribed Ultimatum — data-mined values put 10 rounds at area level 75+ (poe2db). In a 10-round run, rounds 4, 7 and 10 are boss rounds in a random order, and the round-10 boss always drops the Fate that matches it (mobalytics.gg) (game8).
Clear one more 10-round Trial while holding all three, and a door appears in the final reward room — insert the Fates to open the Trialmaster’s Tower (poe2db community wiki). Importantly, none of the tribulation modifiers you picked during your run carry into the fight itself — you walk in at a clean baseline regardless of how you built your run (game8), something players confirmed from launch week onward (official forum).
Each attempt costs a full set of Fates, and getting back to the door means clearing another 10-round Trial — so stock two or three sets before your first attempt (timesaver.gg). If you would rather skip the farm, the Fates are tradeable on the Currency Exchange (mobalytics.gg); prices move with the league economy, so check current rates in-game rather than trusting any fixed figure.
One launch-window caveat for 0.5: at the start of Return of the Ancients, a bug prevented players from placing the three Fates into the Tower door at all. GGG fixed it in 0.5.0b Hotfix 4 (June 1, 2026) (official patch notes). Scattered reports of the encounter failing to start still surface occasionally — see the Community Consensus section below.
Phase-by-Phase Breakdown
The Trialmaster cycles between two forms throughout the fight: Spear Form (melee-focused, the dangerous one) and Caster/Unarmed Form (ranged-focused). The transition out of Spear Form is his Spear Throw (“Chaos aid me!”), which plants the spear in the ground; when he recalls it (“Chaos, aid me!”), he shifts back (poe2db voice lines).
Spear Form
| Attack | What It Does | How to Handle |
|---|---|---|
| Sunder (“Be crushed!” / “Fall before me!”) | Raises the spear overhead and slams it down, releasing branching sunders in a cone; massive Physical damage, and the epicenter can hit you multiple times | Roll the instant the slam starts coming down; if you cannot dodge entirely, at least avoid being directly in front of him at the impact point (game8) |
| Spinning Combo (“Rip and tear!” / “Shred!”) | A sequence of spear swings that release blood projectiles; the final swing comes faster than the rest | Stay behind him and keep lateral distance — the swings track less than you expect (game8) (mobalytics.gg) |
| Blood Slam (“Be obliterated!” / “Feel His power!”) | Plants the spear and channels an expanding blood zone that detonates once it reaches full radius; the wind-up is deliberately long | Walk out before the pull-out detonation; this is also your best stationary DPS window in Spear Form (mobalytics.gg) |
| Spear Throw (“Chaos aid me!”) | Hurls the spear into the ground near you, where it releases expanding pulses and a Physical degen zone that also slows; transitions him to Caster Form | Bait the throw near a wall so the pulses and degen cover less of the arena (game8) |
The Sunder is the attack that kills the vast majority of players — it is slow and loudly telegraphed, but it frequently opens the fight and lands during the load-in stutter, which is why “I got one-shot 0.1 seconds in” is the most common Trialmaster complaint. Pre-roll the moment the arena loads (timesaver.gg) (mobalytics.gg).
Caster / Unarmed Form
| Attack | What It Does | How to Handle |
|---|---|---|
| Tri-Elemental Projectiles | Lobs one Fire, one Cold and one Lightning projectile that explode on impact, up to three volleys in a row | Weave laterally so the impacts spread out; capped elemental resistances turn this into chip damage (mobalytics.gg) |
| Blood Orb (“Embrace Chaos!” / “Surge of Chaos!”) | A large physical orb that bounces off walls, can duplicate on wall impact, and returns along new trajectories | Track it through at least two bounces — this is the attack that catches players who assume it travels once (game8) (mobalytics.gg) |
| Trialmaster’s Heart (“Be still!”) | Spawns a Heart that tethers you when you enter its radius, slowing you heavily; moving too far away snaps the tether for Physical damage plus a stun, and the Heart detonates after a delay | Either step out and eat the break when no other mechanic is overlapping, or wait it out inside the radius. Note that travel skills are disabled while tethered (official forum) (game8) |
| Teleport (“Farcical!” / “Unamusing!”) | Short-range repositioning teleport | Pure mobility — just re-acquire him (poe2db voice lines) |
| Spear Recall (“Chaos, aid me!”) | Recalls the spear, ending the ground pulses and degen zone and shifting back to Spear Form | Re-center immediately and expect a Sunder to follow the transition (poe2db voice lines) |
Time Stop (“Entropy!” / “Ultimatum!”)
Periodically — client data puts both versions on a 30-second cooldown (poe2db) — the Trialmaster freezes time, teleports between three positions, and pre-casts three form-specific attacks: three Sunders in Spear Form or three Blood Orbs in Caster Form. When time resumes, all three land in sequence from those positions (mobalytics.gg).
Watch exactly where he teleports during the freeze — that tells you where each attack will originate once time resumes. Going into the freeze near a wall limits how much of the arena the Sunders or Orbs can threaten, the same principle as the rest of the fight (mobalytics.gg) (game8).
Preparation & Gear Checklist
- Cap elemental resistances at 75%. The Tri-Elemental Projectiles melt under-capped characters fast. Despite the “Chaos” branding, his heavy hits are Physical (Sunder, Blood Orb) and elemental (the projectiles) — client data shows no meaningful Chaos damage component in his kit, so build EHP rather than over-investing in Chaos Resistance for this fight (poe2db) (timesaver.gg).
- Carry a real buffer. Mobalytics recommends roughly 5,000 combined Life, ES and Mana if running Mind Over Matter — explicitly not a hard requirement, but enough room to survive a clipped Sunder and keep fighting (mobalytics.gg).
- Movement speed and a dodge layer. Boots with movement speed plus a reliable dodge-roll turn the Sunder from lethal to manageable; every attack in this fight is avoidable with positioning.
- A Stun-immunity charm. A Stone Charm covers the Heart tether’s stun, which is the fight’s main “gotcha” setup for a follow-up hit (game8).
- Hug the walls. The single most important positional principle: many of his mechanics extend outward from their origin point or follow you, and fighting at the arena edge confines them to less space (mobalytics.gg) (game8).
- Stock extra Fate sets. One death to the opening Sunder can otherwise cost you a full 10-round farm; keep two or three sets banked before your first attempt (timesaver.gg).
Common Mistakes
1. Getting one-shot by the opening Sunder. By far the most common death. The slam is slow and loudly telegraphed, but it often lands during the load-in stutter at fight start. Pre-roll the moment the arena loads and keep your cursor on open ground (timesaver.gg).
2. Fighting in the open arena center. In the center, Sunders branch in every direction, the planted spear’s pulses and degen cover most of the floor, and Blood Orbs have the whole arena to bounce and duplicate. Near a wall, all of these threats are confined to less space (mobalytics.gg).
3. Breaking the Heart tether at the wrong time. The stun-plus-detonation combo is dangerous on its own and lethal when it overlaps a Sunder or Blood Orb — and you cannot dodge out with a travel skill, because travel skills are disabled while tethered. Break the tether only when the arena is calm, or wait it out inside the radius (official forum) (game8).
4. Underestimating Blood Orb wall-bounce duplication. The orb does not travel once and disappear — it bounces off walls and can duplicate on impact, returning along new trajectories. Track it through at least two bounces before you commit to a position (game8).
5. Not tracking teleports during Time Stop. If you tunnel on your own character during the freeze, you have no idea where the three queued attacks will land. Watch his positions, not yours.
Loot Table & Rewards
Every Trialmaster kill guarantees one Unique item from his five-item boss pool — The Adorned, Mahuxotl’s Machination, Glimpse of Chaos, Zerphi’s Genesis or Hateforge (poe2db) (mobalytics.gg). On top of that, he can drop the boss-exclusive Ixchel’s Torment Lineage support gem (poe2db) and has a chance at a corrupted Inscribed Ultimatum (conquestcapped). See the Full Unique Drop Pool section below for item-by-item detail.
Corrupted Inscribed Ultimatums are a wager on your own next run: the prefix names a currency stake (anything from bulk currency up to 3 Divine Orbs, 3 Orbs of Annulment or 3 Orbs of Chance) that you sacrifice when starting the Trial and receive back doubled on completion, while the suffix adds a nasty downside such as -(20–30)% maximum Player Resistances, (50–75)% less Armour/Evasion/Energy Shield, or players being cursed with Temporal Chains (poe2db).
The Trial of Chaos run leading up to him also yields Soul Cores — socketable rewards from the Trial of Chaos that provide mods you cannot get from regular Runes (poe2db).
Ascendancy reward: defeating the Trialmaster for the first time grants your final Ascendancy points (7 and 8), completing the Trial of Chaos ascension path — you do not also need to kill Zarokh (timesaver.gg).
Tips for Specific Builds
Melee / Close-Range Builds. Wall-hugging matters even more for you because the Sunder’s epicenter is most dangerous at close range. When the spear goes up, roll immediately — do not greed for one more hit. The Blood Slam channel is your best DPS window in Spear Form since the wind-up is long and the boss is stationary. In Caster Form, remember that you are naturally closer to the walls where Blood Orb bounces begin.
Ranged / Casting Builds. Your natural distance buys reaction time against the Sunder telegraph, but Time Stop can still catch you if you are not tracking his teleport positions. Hold a medium distance — far enough to read tells, not so far that branching Sunders cross the whole arena. With capped elemental resistances, the Tri-Elemental Projectiles are your main chip-damage threat.
Minion / Totem Builds. Minions do not body-block the Sunder — it goes through them — but they do soak some elemental projectiles and keep pressure on during your dodges. During Time Stop your minions keep attacking while you reposition, so expect the boss to be somewhere other than where you left him when time resumes.
High-Mobility / Dodge Builds. This fight is your playground: every attack is dodgeable with proper timing, and wall-hugging plus orb tracking becomes second nature. The main risk is overconfidence — the Sunder one-shots regardless of your dodge skill if you mistime the roll. The Adorned is a natural chase item if your build invests heavily in Corrupted Magic Jewels.
Boss Stats & Damage Profile (Data-Mined)
Client data gives a precise baseline for the encounter. The Trialmaster (internal type TheTrialmaster) is a Humanoid with the red_blood and very_slow_movement tags, a 1.5-second attack time, 5% critical strike chance with +30% critical damage bonus, and base resistances of 30% Fire / 30% Cold / 30% Lightning / 0% Chaos. His monster multipliers are Life 750%, Armour +50% and Damage 372% (poe2db).
At the lowest displayed monster level (38, the story-trial baseline), that works out to 8,055 Life, 546 Armour and 326 Evasion (poe2db). The real pinnacle fight happens at the area level of your Inscribed Ultimatum (75+ for a 10-round run), where everything scales up dramatically — community guides estimate his endgame Life pool at roughly 10 million (game8). Treat that figure as a guide estimate, not client data.
Two build implications fall out of the numbers. First, his Chaos Resistance is zero, so Chaos damage builds face no mitigation at all. Second, he has no elemental resistance above 30%, which means penetration and exposure effects return less here than against high-resistance bosses — raw damage and crit scaling pull more weight.
Boss Skill Data (Data-Mined)
Skill values mined from the client (level-38 base values; they scale with area level) confirm several things the community learned by dying (poe2db):
| Internal Skill | Key Numbers | Practical Note |
|---|---|---|
| Abyss Slam (Sunder) | 8s cooldown; fires 4 extra projectiles; 14 spikes; Overwhelm 30% Physical Damage Reduction | The epicenter is far deadlier than the branches — even armour-stacked characters should not eat it |
| Blood Slam | 300% attack damage effectiveness plus 200% more attack damage; 13s cooldown on the build-up | Huge single hit, but the wind-up is your safest damage window |
| Spinning Combo | 12s cooldown | The multi-swing “frenzy” sequence with blood projectiles |
| Omega Bolt (Blood Orb) | 166.5–249.8 Physical at level 38; 7s cooldown; Overwhelm 30% Physical Damage Reduction | Physical, not chaos — and it duplicates on wall hits |
| Ground Spear Nova (planted-spear pulses) | 70% attack damage; Breaks Armour equal to 200% of Physical damage dealt | Standing in the pulses shreds your armour for the follow-up Sunder |
| Spear Slam Blood Degen | 50% reduced Movement Speed; +175% area; 3s pulse duration | The degen zone is also a slow field — another reason to bait it to a wall |
| Tether Spike (Heart) | 55.5–83.3 Physical at level 38; Stuns enemies with +25% stun duration; ~10s tether duration; grasping-vines slow of -70% movement speed | Confirms the slow-inside / stun-on-break behavior players describe |
| Time Stop (both forms) | 30s cooldown; repeats the queued attack twice (three total) | Matches the observed “three Sunders / three Blood Orbs” pattern |
| Teleport | 10s cooldown; cannot be interrupted, stunned or knocked back | You cannot stop the reposition |
The standouts: the planted spear’s pulses carry the fight’s Armour Break (not the Blood Orb, as some guides claim), the tether slow is a heavy -70% movement-speed grasping-vines effect, and both Time Stop variants sit on a 30-second cooldown, so you can mentally track when the next one is due.
Full Unique Drop Pool
The guaranteed-unique pool contains five items (poe2db):
- The Adorned (Diamond jewel, requires level 20) — (0–150)% increased Effect of Jewel Socket Passive Skills containing Corrupted Magic Jewels; always Corrupted. At high rolls this multiplies the power of every Corrupted Magic Jewel in your tree, which is why it is the chase item of the pool (poe2db). Community farmers anecdotally rate its drop chance as very low — one official-forum feedback thread reports zero Adorned drops across 85 kills (official forum).
- Mahuxotl’s Machination (Omen Crest Shield, requires level 48) — grants Raise Shield, (66–333)% increased effect of Socketed Soul Cores, (333–666)% increased Armour and Energy Shield, the Everlasting Sacrifice passive, and 2 hidden Augment Sockets. The cornerstone of Soul Core-stacking builds (poe2db).
- Glimpse of Chaos (Tribal Mask, requires level 52) — can be modified while Corrupted; +(50–150) to maximum Life and Mana; Fire/Cold/Lightning Resistance each randomized between -30% and +30%; Chaos Resistance is zero. A high-variance crafting base (poe2db).
- Zerphi’s Genesis (Heavy Belt, requires level 56) — (1–3) Charm Slots, (20–30)% increased Stun Threshold, (25–50)% increased Corrupted Charm effect duration, bidirectional charge-sharing between Charms and Life Flasks (50% of charges consumed by one are granted to the other), +(10–30) Strength, (15–25)% increased Cost Efficiency for skills from Corrupted gems during any flask effect, and Corrupted Blood immunity (poe2db).
- Hateforge (Moulded Mitts, requires level 60) — (300–400)% increased Armour, Gain (3–6) Rage on Hit, gain a random Charge on reaching maximum Rage (no more than once every 3–6 seconds), lose all Rage on reaching maximum Rage, and (-10–10) to maximum Rage. Enables explosive rage-cycling setups (poe2db).
Separately from the guaranteed pool, he can drop Ixchel’s Torment, a boss-exclusive Lineage support gem (Fluke category): skills triggered by the supported skill have their damage, area of effect and projectile speed randomly raised or lowered (40% less to 60% more damage), and recover up to 20% of their cost when triggered — a build-around for trigger setups (poe2db). Its flavor text is a direct nod to the boss: “Few mortals can comprehend the horror of experiencing every possibility.”
Community Consensus: Known Bugs & Workarounds
The fight itself is considered fair and well-telegraphed — the dominant community complaints are about bugs at the door, not the mechanics:
- Fate placement bug (fixed). At 0.5 launch, players could not place the three Fates into the Tower door, blocking the encounter entirely. Fixed in 0.5.0b Hotfix 4 (official patch notes) — though at least one player in that thread reported the issue persisting afterward.
- Boss failing to spawn / empty duplicate arena. Multiple June–July 2026 reports describe walking toward the Trialmaster as he speaks, then being teleported into an identical but empty arena, or the boss simply never appearing — consuming the Fate set with no fight. No official workaround is confirmed; affected players relog and lose the attempt (official forum) (official forum).
- Time Stop soft-lock. A long-standing bug can leave you stuck in the frozen-time state with nothing happening. Community-verified advice: do not close the game — it has always eventually resumed, even after a few minutes (mobalytics.gg).
- Tether locks travel skills. While tethered by the Heart, travel skills (Leap Slam, Stampede and similar) are disabled, which is not indicated anywhere in-game — plan your exit on foot or with a dodge-roll (official forum).
- Farming expectations. Long-term farmers describe the guaranteed unique as nice-but-rarely-valuable, with The Adorned carrying most of the pool’s value and feeling extremely scarce; budget your Fate sets accordingly (official forum).
Notable Drops
- A guaranteed Unique item from his five-item boss pool on every kill: The Adorned, Mahuxotl's Machination, Glimpse of Chaos, Zerphi's Genesis or Hateforge
- A chance at Ixchel's Torment, a boss-exclusive Lineage support gem for trigger builds
- A chance at a corrupted Inscribed Ultimatum, which lets you wager currency on your next Trial of Chaos for a doubled payout
- Your final two Ascendancy points (7 and 8) on your first kill, completing the Trial of Chaos ascension path
