Shark Fin (Tribal Medicine) Quest Guide

Tribal Medicine is an optional Act 4 side quest built around one boss fight and one permanent, one-time reward choice. Here's the full path from finding the boss to picking the right reward for your build.

Step 1 — Get the Shark Fin

The Shark Fin drops from the Great White One, an optional boss on Whakapanu Island (Act 4). Look for the Shark Pit, a sandy open arena near the shoreline — walking to the water's edge triggers the boss to emerge from the sand.

Step 2 — Find Kaimana

Kaimana's location depends on your Act 4 main quest progress:

ProgressKaimana's location
Before defeating Benedictus, First HeraldKarui Village, Ngakanu Island
After defeating Benedictus, First HeraldMedicine Circle, deep inside Ngakanu Island
After completing "The Search" questKarui Ship, southern dock of Kingsmarch

Step 3 — Choose your reward

Kaom's Lesson

+30% increased Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield.

Best for: mixed defense builds, or anyone unsure of their final endgame defensive layer.

Rakiata's Lesson

15% of Armour also applies to Elemental damage · 12% of Evasion converts to Spell Suppression · 12% faster Energy Shield recharge start.

Best for: pure Armour builds, Energy Shield builds, or anyone committed to one defensive layer already.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shark Fin quest choice permanent?

Yes. As of patch 0.5, Kaom's Lesson and Rakiata's Lesson are a one-time permanent choice — there's no NPC option to swap later, though some players have reported the fin can be re-picked up and the boss refought if you haven't turned it in yet.

Kaom's Lesson or Rakiata's Lesson — which should I pick?

Kaom's Lesson (flat +30% Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield) is the safer, build-agnostic pick that scales with whatever defenses you already have. Rakiata's Lesson is more specialized — it converts existing defenses into secondary bonuses across damage types — and suits builds already committed to a specific defensive layer, like pure Armour or Energy Shield stacking.

What if Kaimana isn't where I expect her?

Her location is tied to your Act 4 main quest progress, not a bug — she moves from Ngakanu Island to the Karui Ship at Kingsmarch's southern dock as you clear more of the story.

Is this quest mandatory?

No, it's fully optional and doesn't block main story progression — but the permanent defensive bonus is strong enough that most guides recommend not skipping it.
