0.5.4e Patch Notes Breakdown

TL;DR

A five-part rollout across one week — a restartless shader and performance overhaul that finally tames the 'Device Removed' freezes, a maintenance pass restoring Grand Expedition underground areas, a crash hotfix, an exploit-closing restart, and the kickoff of the ExileCon race qualifiers.

Full Changelog

Patch 0.5.4e is not one patch — it’s a rolling series of five official posts across eight days. It opened on July 30, 2026 with a restartless client patch targeting the shader-loading and “Device Removed” problems that have dogged Path of Exile 2 since launch, continued with a server maintenance on July 31, a small hotfix on August 5, and a server restart on August 6 — the same day the first ExileCon race qualifier went live. There is no balance content anywhere in 0.5.4e, but the performance work is arguably the most consequential technical change of the Runes of Aldur league.

Everything below is taken directly from GGG’s official patch notes and announcement posts — line items we could not verify against official sources have been removed from this page.

The Shader Overhaul and the “Device Removed” Fix (July 30, restartless)

The headline patch deployed without a server restart — restart your client and you have it; consoles received it later. Per the official restartless notes, it makes four changes:

Alongside the patch, GGG published a detailed news post on the shader and “Device Removed” investigation. The key takeaways: the freeze-then-reload behavior that has interrupted mapping sessions since early access affected Nvidia cards on drivers above 560, and the true fix ships in NVIDIA driver 610.88 (players on 610.47 received the fix automatically about a week earlier). GGG’s advice is explicit: update your graphics driver, update the game, then give the shader cache time to rebuild — after which “performance should settle into a much better place than it was before.” If problems persist after both updates, GGG asks for reports in the Bug Reports forum, which suggests they consider the remaining cases outliers rather than the norm.

Maintenance (July 31): Expedition and PlayStation Fixes

The 0.5.4e Maintenance deployed with a server restart and contains two fixes:

Hotfix (August 5): One Crash Fix

The 0.5.4e Hotfix is a single line: “Fixed a client crash.” GGG doesn’t specify which crash, so we won’t guess. Given it shipped the day before the first race qualifier, a more stable client is welcome either way.

Restart (August 6): Two Exploits Closed

The 0.5.4e Restart closes two movement-related bugs, both with obvious competitive relevance:

ExileCon Qualifiers Kick Off

The same week, GGG’s ExileCon Path of Exile 2 Qualifiers began — four weekly Solo Self-Found races on a fixed Runes of Aldur layout, starting August 6 and continuing August 13, 20 and 27, with ZiggyD and Raiz casting. Each event is a race to be first to kill Tavakai in Act Four; it’s not Hardcore, but each death immobilizes you for two and a half minutes, which in a fixed-layout race is functionally an elimination. Entry is via the Join button on the Character Select screen, and per the official ruleset you must stream your full run on a Twitch-linked account to be eligible. Qualifiers are open to PC and console, but the live finale at ExileCon in New Zealand is PC-only. Each qualifier winner gets flights and accommodation for ExileCon weekend, an Ultra VIP ticket, a seat in the race finale, and a Demigod’s Virtue Unique helmet.

Seen together, the timing is tidy: the August 6 restart closed arena-escape and roll-extending exploits the very day Qualifier One began, and the July 30 shader work landed just in time to give racers a more stable client. Whether or not you race, that convergence is why 0.5.4e arrived as five pieces instead of one.

What This Means for Players

If you play on PC with an Nvidia card, this is the most important patch since 0.5.4 launched: update to driver 610.88 or newer, patch the game, tolerate one round of slow shader recompilation, and the freeze-and-reload interruptions that have plagued mapping should be gone or drastically reduced. Steam players additionally stop bleeding disk space to the Fossilize cache, and everyone gets faster shader loads once rebuilt. Check your Vsync setting after patching — the client will default you to Locked, which GGG now recommends over Adaptive. Expedition farmers can run Grand Expeditions again with underground areas actually spawning as of July 31. PlayStation players get their rendering fix and receive the shader patch on a delayed schedule. And if you’re watching or entering the ExileCon qualifiers, know that the two flashiest movement exploits were removed before race one — the leaderboard reflects the game as intended.
