King in the Mists Boss Guide
Phase Breakdown
- Phase 1: Phase 1 (Human Form)TriggerFight start, after activating all three Ritual Altars in the arenaMechanicStandard curse-and-attack pattern typical of an Act 1 optional boss.CounterThis phase is comparatively straightforward, use it to learn his tells before the harder transformation.
- Phase 2: Phase 2 (Leshen-like Tree Form)TriggerAround 33% health in Phase 1MechanicHe becomes briefly untargetable, fully restores his health and barriers, and transforms into a tree-like creature. New mechanics layer on top of his existing kit: a chasing Blood Tornado that applies Armour Break on hit, physical Blood Waves from the arena edges that knock you back, roaming purple insect swarms dealing Chaos damage over time, a large slow-exploding orb that Maims on impact, and purple ground Pustules that explode when approached and stack a debuff called Shadow Surge.CounterKeep distance from the Blood Tornado rather than continuously moving away from it in a straight line, a dodge roll or two works better than constant kiting. Never let Shadow Surge stacks reach 5 or more, that's an effective one-shot. If you get pulled into the Wildwood Maze sub-mechanic, follow the glowing wisps immediately since they dissipate over time.
Most Common Deaths
- Letting Shadow Surge stacks from the purple Pustules climb to 5+ before clearing them
- Getting caught by the Blood Tornado while trying to out-walk it instead of using proper dodge timing
- Losing track of the wisp trail in the Wildwood Maze and wasting the window before it disappears

Full Fight Guide
The King in the Mists is an optional Act 1 boss, found by activating three Ritual Altars in his arena, a black cloud blocks the path to him until all three are complete. He’s a reasonable early check on your build’s ability to handle a real two-phase fight, and the permanent Spirit reward from your first kill is worth picking up even if you’re not planning to fully clear optional content on every character.
If your build isn’t quite ready for him at the level you encounter him, PoE2’s multiplayer support lets you bring in help rather than forcing a solo attempt.
Notable Drops
- Gembloom Skull on your first kill, a permanent +30 Spirit item
