Doryani, Royal Thaumaturge Boss Guide (Act 3)
Phase Breakdown
- Phase 1: Phase 1TriggerFight start, in the Black Chambers of the PastMechanicA mix of physical and tri-elemental attacks, including a ground slam that creates a Lightning-Fire nova. Periodically the altar lowers and charges spikes around the room that fire arcing lightning bolts when touched, and he spawns stationary Solar Orbs that burn you if you linger nearby, sometimes paired with a tracking lightning beam or a flameblast at his feet that detonates any active Solar Orbs.CounterAvoid touching the charged spikes around the room during the altar phase, and keep moving away from Solar Orbs rather than fighting near them once they're active.
- Phase 2: Phase 2 (Doryani's Triumph, mech form)TriggerBelow 50% healthMechanicDoryani mounts a mech called Doryani's Triumph, gaining a frost laser arc from its left arm and a flamethrower arc from its right arm.CounterBoth arm attacks sweep in an arc, positioning outside the sweep radius rather than trying to out-heal them is the safer approach.
- Phase 3: Phase 3 (Aerial mech assault)TriggerOnce Doryani's Triumph drops below 50% healthMechanicDoryani takes to the air with detached mech legs continuously reforming to fire lasers from above, plus stationary or player-tracking Fire and Lightning pillars. Eventually the mech transforms into a giant fist that chases you (gradually losing speed) before slamming down for a massive, lethal area attack. The right arm fires a red flamethrower and the left arm a red lightning beam in a T-shaped pattern.CounterThe giant fist chase attack loses speed over time, so simply maintaining distance eventually outpaces it before the slam lands. Respect the T-shaped lightning beam's full coverage rather than assuming a small sidestep clears it.
Most Common Deaths
- Getting hit by the ground slam's Lightning-Fire nova while focused on other room mechanics
- Standing too close to active Solar Orbs during the tracking beam or flameblast combo
- Underestimating the range of the T-shaped lightning beam in the final aerial phase
Full Fight Guide
Full Fight Guide
Doryani, Royal Thaumaturge is the final boss of Act 3, fought in the Black Chambers of the Past after locating the Testing Pit. Before you can reach Doryani, you must defeat Viper Napuatzi in Utzaal to unlock Aggorat and find the entrance to the Black Chambers. In the Black Chambers, look for bridges that emerge from the water — these lead to the arena where Doryani awaits (poecurrency.com).
This is a three-phase escalation: a grounded caster phase, a mech-mounted melee-range phase, and finally an aerial assault phase once the mech itself is worn down. After defeating Doryani’s Triumph, Alva escapes her imprisonment and convinces Doryani to join your side against the Beast. This fight is a major story beat, not just a difficulty check.
Phase-by-Phase Breakdown
Phase 1 — Doryani, Royal Thaumaturge
Doryani’s first phase is a mix of physical and tri-elemental attacks fought in an arena with interactive environment mechanics. While the phase has many abilities, most are survivable with decent resistances — the key is identifying the lethal ones (mobalytics.gg).
Standard Abilities:
- Lightning Spray — Tracking lightning bolts from Doryani’s hands. Low damage individually; you can tank a few hits if your lightning resistance is reasonable.
- Fire Shot — Small fire projectiles. Not dangerous with capped fire resistance; treat these as minor chip damage.
- Charged Blast — Doryani visibly charges, then releases a powerful cone of chaos damage. Dodge sideways when you see the charge-up animation. A large cone indicator appears at the end of the cast (poecurrency.com).
- Overhead Bolts — Spinning bolts fall from above after a charge-up. Retreat to maximum range and use ranged attacks during this window.
Lethal Mechanics:
-
Crystal Lightning Cone (most dangerous Phase 1 ability) — Doryani throws red crystals on the ground and fires a lightning beam at them. The crystals refract the beam into an approximately 120-degree, 2.5-meter cone of deadly lightning damage. When you see red crystal particles forming in front of Doryani, immediately either run at least 6 meters away (7-10 is safer) or move at least 30 degrees to either side from Doryani’s perspective. This ability can one-shot characters even with decent resistances, so drop everything to dodge it — even canceling high-impact skills like Comet (mobalytics.gg).
-
Central Lightning Turret — Doryani conjures a pillar in the center of the arena that slowly rotates and periodically fires lightning beams at targeted areas. You get one second of warning before beams fire. The damage is annoying rather than deadly — dodge it if you can, endure it if you must, but do not dodge it if doing so puts you in the path of something more dangerous. This turret persists for approximately 20 seconds (mobalytics.gg).
-
Five Lightning Traps — Doryani says “Five Moves Ahead” or “The Best Laid Plans” before placing long-lasting traps at five locations around the arena. Counterintuitively, you should walk over them to trigger them — there is a delay before they deal damage, so you can safely clear them. Removing traps from the battlefield is important because they constrain your ability to dodge the Crystal Lightning Cone and other dangerous abilities (mobalytics.gg).
-
Solar Orbs — Doryani spawns three slowly moving orbs that burn you if you linger nearby. After time passes, they target your position with a larger explosion. Stay away from them rather than trying to fight through their proximity damage. When paired with the tracking lightning beam or flameblast at Doryani’s feet (which detonates active Solar Orbs), standing near them becomes extremely dangerous (poecurrency.com).
Voice Cues: Doryani talks frequently during combat. Most voice lines are flavor, with two notable exceptions: “Five Moves Ahead” and “The Best Laid Plans” signal the trap placement, and he sometimes says “The Power Of The Vaal” before the Crystal Lightning Cone — though this cue is inconsistent (mobalytics.gg).
Phase 2 — Doryani’s Triumph (Mech Form)
At 50% health, Doryani mounts a massive crab-like mech called Doryani’s Triumph and his health fully restores. This is the longest phase and contains more killing strikes, but Doryani is also slow and clumsy inside the mech. Four rules govern this phase (mobalytics.gg):
Rule 1: Watch the Arms. In single-arm attacks, dodge toward the moving arm. If Doryani raises the arm on the right side of your screen, dodge right — his arm sweeps across his body, so the safe zone is on the same side as the raised arm. This pattern dodges all dangerous single-arm attacks but not the fire/ice cannons (which can be endured).
Rule 2: Both Arms Raised = Run. Two-handed slams are killing strikes. Do not try to tank them. Get away from where Doryani was looking when the slam started. The two hits land 0.63 seconds apart — the first for roughly 1700 damage, the second fatal — making survival unrealistic even with 3500 HP in Cruel difficulty (mobalytics.gg).
Rule 3: Disco Laser — Run Opposite. When the mech’s rotating laser sweeps (available after roughly 75% mech health), run in the opposite direction. If it sweeps clockwise, run counterclockwise and attempt to dodge-roll through it. Running the same direction as the laser keeps you inside the dangerous area longer and is often lethal.
Rule 4: Ground Circles = Get Out. Multiple versions of ground-slam circles exist, all following the same rule: stop everything, even big windup skills, and get out of the marked area. The damage is enormous and the cast time is short enough that greedy players will die.
Additional Phase 2 Mechanics:
- Frost/Flamethrower Arms — The left arm fires frost and the right arm fires flame in sweeping arcs. The flamethrower is easy to avoid; the frost cannon is faster and sweeps erratically. When the mech’s health drops low, the effects turn red and add an extra half-rotation, making the sweep much wider (poe.inven.co.kr).
- Ground Slam — Alternating arm slams dealing heavy physical damage. Standing behind the mech avoids these completely (poecurrency.com).
The safest position during Phase 2 is at the mech’s flank — roughly perpendicular to its facing direction, slightly behind the shoulder. Both melee and ranged builds benefit from this positioning since most arm attacks project forward or sweep across the front (kou-gamer.com).
Phase 3 — Aerial Mech Assault
When Doryani’s Triumph drops below 50% health, the head detaches and takes to the air while the mech legs continue operating independently. This is the most mechanically dense portion of the fight:
- Detached Mech Legs — The legs reform and fire tracking lasers from above. These persist throughout Phase 3 and require constant awareness of ceiling-based threats.
- Fire and Lightning Pillars — Stationary or player-tracking elemental pillars spawn throughout the arena. Keep moving to avoid being cornered between multiple pillar effects.
- T-Shaped Lightning Beam — The left arm fires a red lightning beam in a T-shaped pattern. The range is much wider than it appears — a small sidestep will not clear it. You must move significantly perpendicular to the beam’s direction.
- Giant Fist Chase — The mech transforms into a massive fist that pursues you, gradually losing speed. Simply maintain distance — the fist slows enough that consistent movement outpaces it before the slam lands. Do not try to dodge-roll through the fist; just keep running.
- Circular Area Attacks — When Doryani is airborne, large circular AoE attacks originate from the mech’s position. Dash to the outer edge of the arena to give yourself maximum reaction time (kou-gamer.com).
Preparation & Gear Checklist
- Cap Fire and Lightning Resistances — These are the two dominant damage types across all three phases. Fire resistance is especially critical; characters who can clear Act 2’s Jamanra but have low fire resistance will struggle significantly (mobalytics.gg).
- Level 45+ recommended — If you have not reached this level by Act 3, replace any outdated Act 1 gear with items offering better resistances and higher Armor, Energy Shield, or Evasion (poecurrency.com).
- Movement speed on boots — Doryani has multiple attacks that can only be avoided by fast dodges or movement. Adding 20%+ movement speed to your boots dramatically improves survivability across all phases (kou-gamer.com).
- Armor does little against Doryani — His attacks are predominantly elemental. Prioritize elemental resistances and Energy Shield/Evasion over Armor (mobalytics.gg).
- Charm slots — Equip charms that block Ignite (for fire attacks) and Shock (for lightning attacks). A Topaz Charm provides additional lightning protection during Phase 1’s Crystal Lightning Cone window.
- Level-appropriate life flask — Ensure your life flask has two useful modifiers. Doryani’s sustained chip damage makes flask quality important.
Common Mistakes
-
Getting hit by the ground slam’s Lightning-Fire nova while focused on other room mechanics. The nova has a wide radius and the visual can be obscured by other effects. Train yourself to look away from Doryani and check the environment periodically.
-
Standing too close to active Solar Orbs during the tracking beam or flameblast combo. The Solar Orbs do less damage than they appear, but the combo with the detonating flameblast turns a mild hazard into a lethal one. Always give orbs a wide berth.
-
Underestimating the range of the T-shaped lightning beam in the final aerial phase. A small sidestep is not enough. You need to move significantly perpendicular to the beam’s axis to clear its full coverage area.
-
Trying to out-heal the disco laser instead of running opposite. Running in the same direction as the sweep keeps you inside the damage zone longer. Always run against the rotation and dodge-roll through if needed.
-
Ignoring the Five Lightning Traps and letting them constrain your movement. Clearing the traps proactively opens up the arena for dodging the truly lethal Crystal Lightning Cone.
Loot Table & Rewards
Doryani drops standard Act 3 boss rewards and story progression items. Defeating him is mandatory for campaign advancement — it leads directly into the endgame transition sequence with Alva. The primary reward is narrative progress rather than specific unique items, but the encounter also provides experience and standard loot appropriate for Act 3 difficulty.
In the Atlas endgame, a tuned-up version of Doryani appears as the Stone Citadel guardian, where he drops the Weathered Crisis Fragment needed to access the Arbiter of Ash pinnacle boss. This endgame version retains the same combat identity with significantly escalated stats (timesaver.gg).
Tips for Specific Builds
Melee / Close-Range Builds
Melee characters have an advantage in Phase 2: standing at the mech’s flank (roughly perpendicular to its facing, slightly behind the shoulder) avoids almost all arm attacks. In Phase 1, getting close to Doryani’s back is generally safe since most of his lethal abilities project forward. Phase 3 is the hardest for melee due to the constant repositioning required by aerial attacks — time your damage windows between the fist chase and T-beam cycles.
Ranged / Projectile Builds
Ranged builds excel in Phase 1 where you can maintain distance from the Crystal Lightning Cone while still dealing damage. In Phase 2, counterintuitively, you should still position near the mech’s flank rather than at maximum range — the arm sweeps cover a wide arc at distance but leave safe zones close to the body. Phase 3 rewards ranged play since you can continue attacking during the fist chase and while dodging pillars.
Spell / Caster Builds
Casters should prioritize instant-cast or mobile spells over stationary channeling. The Crystal Lightning Cone requires immediate repositioning, which punishes long cast-time abilities. Frost Wall combined with Comet is effective for Phase 1 — push Doryani to the arena edge and bombard him. In Phase 2, switch to instant or short-cast skills since the mech’s attacks demand constant movement. For Phase 3, use persistent ground effects (chilled ground, lingering AoE) to maintain damage while you focus on dodging (kou-gamer.com).
Summoner / Minion Builds
Minion builds face a challenge: Doryani’s area attacks will quickly clear your minions if they cluster near him. Spread your summons and focus on maintaining your own positioning rather than trying to micro-manage minion placement. Phase 2 is actually the strongest phase for summoners since the mech’s slow movement allows your minions sustained uptime. Phase 3 is dangerous because the aerial attacks do not discriminate between you and your minions, and losing your army leaves you without a damage source.
Notable Drops
